A consultation meeting was held at the university to discuss the project “Conversion of CHP-5 from Coal to Gas and Capacity Expansion,” which is being implemented in Kentau, Turkistan Region.
The meeting was jointly organized by the university’s Department of Science, KPMG, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as part of an assignment from the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the project’s potential social and environmental impacts and gather expert opinions and recommendations from the university’s academic and research community.
The meeting brought together ADB representatives, including Senior Project Coordinator Kenzhehan Abuov, Senior Energy Specialist Meutia Chaerani, and Climate Change Specialist Swati Dsouza. KPMG was represented by Senior Consultants Yerzhan Ilyashev and Gulaiym Mashrap from the Investments and Capital Markets division of KPMG Tax and Advisory, as well as Environmental Lead Consultant Vikrant Vankhede and other experts. Faculty members and researchers from the university also participated in the meeting.
The session was moderated by Ainash Oshibayeva, Vice-Rector for Science and Strategic Development.
During the meeting, KPMG representatives delivered a presentation on the project to convert CHP-5 in Kentau from coal to gas and expand its capacity.
The participants discussed key issues related to Kazakhstan’s decarbonization agenda, energy security, and sustainable economic development. Representatives of the ADB and KPMG listened to the views and recommendations of the university’s scientists and experts, particularly regarding the potential social and environmental impacts of the project.
The participants then exchanged views on the project and discussed the scientific and practical aspects of its implementation in greater detail. Industry experts shared their professional experience and insights, while university researchers contributed their perspectives and recommendations.
The visiting experts also expressed interest in the university’s academic programs and research capacity. They learned more about the university’s scientific activities, particularly in the field of natural sciences, and discussed areas of potential academic and research cooperation.
Following the meeting, the project representatives toured the university’s laboratories and familiarized themselves with its research infrastructure and facilities.
